Session Description:
More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's Disease. It is estimated that one in ten individuals over the age of 65, and one in two over the age of 85, have AD. With an increasingly aging population, it is imperative that we learn strategies to effectively treat this illness.

Dr. Monica Parker, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at Emory University School of Medicine, will present an overview of the disease, describe pharmacologic and behavioral treatments, and discuss the interrelationship between heart and brain health.

Session Objectives:
After completing this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, including symptoms and risk factors, the process for diagnosis and the prevalence of each.
  2. Prescribe pharmacologic therapies for Alzheimer’s Disease.
  3. Use strategies for nonpharmacologic interventions to manage behavioral disturbances in Alzheimer's Disease.
  4. Discuss the Brain-Body connection and the impact of a healthy lifestyle on heart and brain health
Participants who participate in this program will be eligible for CME, GNA, National Association of Social Worker, and Nursing Home Administrators credits.
