Healthcare Georgia Foundation Announces 14 Grants Totaling $1.34 million

Announces $675,000 in Support of the Georgia Childhood Asthma Management Program (GCAMP)

Atlanta, Georgia – May 17, 2010 - Healthcare Georgia Foundation today announced $1,340,000 in grant awards to 14 organizations and programs benefitting the health of Georgians, including a $675,000 investment in support of the full implementation the Georgia Childhood Asthma Management Program (GCAMP).

The GCAMP program is a multi-year funding effort by the Foundation that seeks to address the adverse outcomes associated with childhood asthma by enhancing the provision of services delivered by providers. “Childhood asthma is a widespread public health issue both nationally and in Georgia, and is among the most common reasons children miss school and experience decreased physical activity,” said Gary D. Nelson, president, Healthcare Georgia Foundation. “By supporting coordinated, comprehensive evidence-based programs that strengthen linkages among those responsible for children’s asthma care, we seek to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities.”

The five statewide GCAMP recipients are Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Hughes Spalding, Georgia Association for Primary Health Care, Inc., Georgia State University Research Foundation, Lowndes County Board of Health, and St. Galilee Outreach Ministry, Inc.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation $125,000
Support for a comprehensive Asthma Management Program, which provides an integrated approach to managing childhood asthma for children in metropolitan Atlanta.    
 
Georgia Association for Primary Health Care, Inc. $150,000
Support to improve asthma management among children and adolescents by implementing the Learning Model, Chronic Care Model and Performance Improvement Model in four of Georgia's federally qualified health centers.    
 
Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, Inc. $150,000
Support to implement an advocacy and policy project to strengthen local capacity in two Georgia communities (Albany and Clayton County) to address comprehensive teen pregnancy prevention.    
 
Georgia State University Research Foundation $120,000
Support to continue an asthma management program in the Neighborhood Planning Unit V community, with a focus on training and health care navigation for children and their parents/caregivers.    
 
Georgia Watch $175,000
Support the Hospital Accountability Project designed to broaden accessibility to affordable, quality health care for uninsured, underinsured and low-income Georgians by addressing soci-economic obstacles, hospital policies and state regulations.    
 
Grantmakers In Health $2,500
Support for the 2010 Annual Meeting on Health Philanthropy scheduled for March 12-12, 2010 in Orlando, Florida and support for Healthcare Georgia Foundation's membership and partnership in Grantmakers in Health.    
 
Lowndes County Board of Health $150,000
Support to continue a childhood asthma management program through Children's Medical Services.    
 
Mathews & Maxwell, Inc. $12,000
Provide Healthcare Georgia Foundation with health legislative tracking; analysis and strategic planning; and keeping the Foundation informed of legislative and regulatory activities that impact public health, trauma care, and the health safety net.    
 
Medbank Foundation, Inc. $100,000
Support to expand access to free prescription medications to their partner clinics in Chatham and Bulloch counties.    
 
Mission Wise $4,000
Support for a series of half-day workshops on intellectual property and earned income for nonprofit health organizations.    
 
National Foundation for the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Inc. $207,000
Support to assist Healthcare Georgia Foundation in the creation of a statewide Evaluation Resource Center for nonprofit health organizations by providing the expertise of senior evaluation scientist.    
 
Southeastern Council of Foundations $7,000
Support for the 2010 Health Legacy Foundation Trustee/CEO Retreat scheduled for March 9-10, 2010 in Orlando, Florida and support Healthcare Georgia Foundation's SECF membership.    
 
St. Galilee Outreach Ministry, Inc. $130,000
Support to continue to implement the Central Georgia Asthma Education Initiative (CGAEI), a community health education program targeting six counties in the North Central Health District.    
 
Theisen Consulting LLC $7,500
Support to design and publish a guide to assist nonprofits to plan and execute Board and staff succession efforts.
