Healthcare Georgia Foundation Announces Over $600,000 in Grants

Grants Aimed at Improving the Health of all Georgians

Atlanta, Georgia – October 17, 2002 - Healthcare Georgia Foundation, a statewide, private independent foundation located in Atlanta, today announced over $600,000 in grants to 10 programs and organizations across the state. "The Foundation is very pleased to announce these grant awards," said Dr. Gary Nelson, President of Healthcare Georgia Foundation. "We are committed to advancing the health of all Georgians and are excited about the positive impact these grants will have in their respective areas."

"Having completed our first statewide Listening Tour this summer, the Foundation gained invaluable insight to the real health challenges that Georgians face everyday and have used this information in our grantmaking to better serve communities," added Nelson. "Given the state of both the local and national economy and rising healthcare costs, it is likely that even more Georgians will need access to these critically important programs and organizations."

The following is a sampling of some of the grant awards recently made by the Foundation:

AID Atlanta $100,000
To support the continued operation of the on-site HIV Testing & Counseling Clinic and to expand outreach and oral testing efforts among underserved high-risk populations in metro Atlanta with an emphasis on the Latino population.    
 
Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc. $100,000
To support the provision of primary healthcare services for the poor and underserved in five counties in Southwest Georgia eligible to participate in the Indigent Drug Program.    
 
Good News Health Center $80,000
IIn general operating support to bolster the Center's capacity to absorb a 25% annual increase in its multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-lingual patient population in Gainesville and Hall County, Georgia.    
 
Richmond County Medical Society Project Access, Inc. $100,000
In general operating support to manage the physician referral network, patient appointment software and the recruitment of physician volunteers who provide comprehensive medical care to Richmond County's uninsured residents.    
 
Union Mission $100,000
In support of expanding dental care and prescription assistance programs offered by pharmaceutical companies for the homeless and medically indigent of Chatham and Effingham counties.    
 
Urban Primary Health Care Network $100,000
To support the expansion of primary healthcare access through strategic planning and network integration among three Atlanta area Federally Qualified Community Health Centers.
