Healthcare Georgia Foundation releases 2016 survey results of health and healthcare in rural Georgia

Rural Georgians cite costs, coverage, and place of residence as biggest barriers to quality health care

Atlanta, GA – April 03, 2017 - Healthcare Georgia Foundation has announced the results of a 2016 statewide public survey by Opinion Savvy, LLC that polled rural Georgians on their perceptions of the structure, delivery, and financing of their healthcare services. Foundation President Gary Nelson, PhD, says the findings have important implications for statewide programs and policies seeking to address health equity and decrease health disparities for rural Georgians.

“The survey results confirm that the ability to receive the right healthcare services at the right time, in the right place is not simply determined by the healthcare system,” said Dr. Nelson. “Social and environmental factors are equally important as are the personal attributes of health consumers, such as literacy, employment, poverty and transportation.”

Survey respondents reported that urgent care, transportation, and access to doctors were the most desired basic services. When compared to a similar 2015 Foundation survey by Opinion Savvy, more rural Georgians reported experiencing issues with access to healthcare in 2016.

In addition, 80% of the rural residents polled said their quality of life had diminished due to lack of quality healthcare and 27.9% believe it is the state government’s responsibility to ensure local access to quality care.
