Healthcare Georgia Foundation Announces 29 Grants to Organizations and Programs Totaling More Than $1.3M

Awards feature Foundation’s new cycle-based grantmaking strategy, focus on evaluation and public health

Atlanta, GA – June 18, 2012 - Healthcare Georgia Foundation today announced $1,308,375 in grant awards to 29 organizations and programs benefitting the health of Georgians. These 2012 awards reflect Healthcare Georgia Foundation’s desire to better align resources across its priority areas and streamline its grant application process through cycle-based funding. The inaugural Cycle 1 grants were awarded to 13 Georgia-based health nonprofits totaling $550,000.

In addition, the Foundation continued its support of the recently launched Evaluation Resource Center (ERC), a program that offers evaluation tools and services tailored to help nonprofits achieve better outcomes. “Healthcare Georgia Foundation is strongly committed, both internally and externally, to achieving better outcomes,” said Gary D. Nelson, president. “Our new grantmaking approach, coupled with the launch of the ERC will help ensure that we leverage our limited resources for maximum impact.” The Foundation also affirmed its ongoing support of Georgia’s public health system through several grants aimed at bolstering resources and health services for underserved communities.

The grant awards are as follows:

Athens Nurses Clinic $19,400
Support to provide professional development opportunities to key staff, to increase its interaction with community organizations and to complete the integration of its electronic medical records system.    
 
Avatar Communications, Inc. $60,000
Support for the marketing and communication efforts of HealthTecdl programming for Healthcare Georgia Foundation’s Distance Learning program.    
 
Be The Match Foundation $10,000
Support to provide strategic planning and leadership training for the Georgia office’s Leadership Council.    
 
Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center (AHEC) $10,000
Support for the production of six distance learning programs designed to strengthen Georgia’s healthcare workforce and sustain their internal distance learning capabilities.    
 
Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, Inc. $50,000
Support to develop a strategic plan, to enhance IT infrastructure and to conduct professional development activities for staff.    
 
Center for Excellence in Health Care Journalism $6,000
Support for Health Journalism 2012 and the Georgia Health Journalism Fellowship program    
 
Christ Community Health Services Augusta Inc. $42,000
Support to strengthen and sustain its electronic medical record capabilities and to enhance its informational technology infrastructure.    
 
Community Health Mission, Inc. $42,000
Support to upgrade its electronic medical records (EMR) system to improve quality of care, to interchange data between other safety net providers and to better track and monitor patient outcomes.    
 
First Step Staffing Inc. $50,000
Support for an associate director to assume the responsibility of development and marketing.    
 
Georgia Center for Nonprofits, Inc. $128,000
Support for completing and evaluation of Phase IV and support for Phase V of the Healthcare Georgia Foundation Capacity Building Project.    
 
Georgia Community Support And Solutions Inc $49,500
Support to strengthen its communications, public relations and development/fundraising capacity.    
 
Georgia State University - Institute of Public Health $100,000
Support to conduct environmental scans of local policy and capacity in Georgia to address community-based childhood obesity prevention.    
 
Georgia Statewide AHEC Network Program Office $10,000
Support for the production of six distance learning programs designed to strengthen Georgia’s healthcare workforce and sustain their internal distance learning capabilities.    
 
Grantmakers for Effective Organizations $2,875
Support as a 2012 Funding Partner at a level commensurate with Foundation assets.    
 
Grantmakers In Health $4,000
Support as a 2012 Funding Partner at a level commensurate with Foundation assets.    
 
Group Health Research Institute - Center for Community Health and Evaluation $110,000
Support for Phase III and completed development and implementation of the Healthcare Georgia Foundation Evaluation Resource Center (ERC), serving nonprofit health organizations throughout Georgia.    
 
Group Health Research Institute - Center for Community Health and Evaluation $3,000
Support to publish a monograph tailored for nonprofits focusing on Health Impact Assessments (HIA).    
 
Health Education Assessment And Leadership Inc. (HEAL) $42,000
Support for the salary of the clinic administrator to manage the daily operations of the clinic.    
 
Planned Parenthood Southeast Inc. $50,000
Support to implement an electronic practice management system (EPM).    
 
Porter Novelli $66,000
Support to conduct a needs assessment for a public health journal and support to develop a model for managing a peer-reviewed Georgia-based journal.    
 
Prevent Blindness Georgia $44,100
Support to develop a succession plan, to conduct leadership training for staff and to conduct administrative reorganization.    
 
Southeastern Council of Foundations $7,000
To support membership to the Southeastern Council of Foundations for 2012.    
 
Southwest Public Health District $17,000
Support to conduct an evaluation of the Dougherty County Health Department’s Centering Pregnancy.    
 
TechBridge, Inc. $130,000
Support for the technology implementation, network management, network maintenance, program support and training efforts for the use of HealthTecdl for Healthcare Georgia Foundation’s Distance Learning program.    
 
The Health Initiative, Inc. $50,000
Support to develop a sustainability plan, create a marketing and communications plan, and to provide professional development for staff and board members.    
 
The Schapiro Group, Inc. $4,500
Support for the 2012 Georgia Legislative Poll and polling data on priority health issues in Georgia.    
 
Voices for Georgia's Children $100,000
Support to strengthen local and state capacity to advocate for improved child health in Georgia.    
 
Whitefoord Community Program $50,000
Support to build its capacity through branding and marketing of its school-based health centers for underserved children and families living in metropolitan Atlanta.    
 
Wholistic Stress Control Institute Inc $50,000
Support to develop a strategic plan and a sustainability plan, to upgrade computer software/database, and to conduct a staff and board strategic planning workshop.
